James Lee Higgs, 69, of Burlington, died at 3:37 PM Saturday, May 22, 2010, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born July 23, 1940, in Owensboro, KY, he was the son of James Alex and Pearl A. Arnold Vaughn Higgs. On December 4, 1981, he married Barbara L. Schulte in Burlington.

Jim worked for U.S. Gypsum in Sperry for 23 years. After retirement he worked at Catfish Bend Casino.
He was an avid gardener, enjoyed cats, feeding birds, being outdoors, taking trips to the casino, and cherished spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara; six sons, Randy (Sabrina) Higgs of Des Moines, IA, Mike Higgs, and Bobby Higgs, both of Arkansas, Patrick (Diann) Kaltefleiter of Burlington, Mark (Suzie) Kaltefleiter of Des Moines, IA, and Michael (Kathy) Schulte of Blue Grass, IA; three daughters, Beth Wilson, Lisa (Jeff) Hand, and Margie (Allen) Neff, all of Burlington; 14 grandchildren, including Barbie Wilson who made her home with Jim and Barbara; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Raymond Higgs of Big Rock, TN; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and three brothers.

The Funeral Service for Mr. Higgs will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, May 25, 2010, at the Hass-Thielen Funeral Home with Reverend Dean Graber officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
A memorial has been established for the Great River Hospice House.
